Jeremy Smith has 34 saves, gets his first NHL win as Avalanche beats Sabres

The final game puck was next to Jeremy Smith as he sat at his dressing-room stall late Saturday night. “I’ve got it right here,” the Avalanche goalie said, pointing. “It’s not going anywhere. Anywhere but my shelf.” At age 27, after seven seasons in ECHL and American Hockey League, and in his third NHL start since being called up to the Avalanche, Smith made 34 saves and got his first career NHL win as Colorado beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 at the Pepsi Center. “The first one’s always going to be the first one,” Smith said. Colorado (17-40-3) ended its latest losing streak at three and won for only the second time in its last 10 games. Smith was in the net because the scheduled starter, Calvin Pickard, came down with a stiff neck and instead watched from the bench as Smith — who previously was in the crease for losses at New Jersey and Nashville — played and then got to accept congratulations from his teammates. “The first one’s always going to be the first one,” Smith said. It wasn’t pretty, but it counted.
