Attorney General announces support for a new commission on opioid abuse

By Randy Ellis Staff Writer rellis@oklahoman.comDeclaring that Oklahoma is in the midst of "an opioid abuse epidemic that is reaching a crisis level," Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter joined state lawmakers Wednesday in announcing support for a resolution to form an Oklahoma Commission on Opioid Abuse. "Over the last three years, there have been 2,684 reported opioid related deaths in the state," Hunter said, adding that he believes opioid linked deaths are likely undercounted because not every death results in an autopsy or toxicology screen. Hunter said he is determined to get a handle on the problem and won't hesitate to use the subpoena powers of the state's multicounty grand jury, if necessary, to obtain data from pill manufacturers.
