“A Quiet Passion” explores the contradictions of poet Emily Dickinson’s life

Three and one-half stars. Rated PG-13. 126 minutes. In “A Quiet Passion,” the period-drama veteran Terence Davies (“Sunset Song,” “The House of Mirth”) turns his attention to poet Emily Dickinson. The prolific writer may not have had the most cinematic existence — she spent most of her days holed up inside her childhood home — but that doesn’t lessen of the impact of this tribute to Dickinson’s genius, which is by turns funny, tragic and thrilling.
