Giants lose Span again — thumb sprain

Giants lose Span again — thumb sprain CHICAGO - Denard Span walked through the clubhouse Monday with his left wrist wrapped. A residue from crashing into the wall in St. Louis? No, a new injury caused by getting jammed on a pitch. Span missed the series opener with what manager Bruce Bochy called a sprained thumb. Span said the area around the thumb on his palm and the back of his hand were swollen. Bochy doubts he will start before Wednesday, but was available Monday to pinch-run, play the outfield or hit if absolutely needed. Span said the injury bothered him for a couple of days and demonstrated that he could not stretch his thumb across his hand to his pinkie. Asked when he thought he might play, he said, "I'm not good at telling fibs, so I don’t know." The Giants' turnaround coincided with Span's return from a sprained shoulder. Hunter Pence ran sprints for the first time since going on the disabled list with a left-hamstring strain and said he felt good. The Giants are being super-cautious after Pence blew out the tendon on the other hamstring last season and missed two months. The Giants have been playing Kelby Tomlinson in center field at Triple-A Sacramento hoping to make him more versatile for a p0tential callup. Aaron Hill, who is 2-for-5 in two rehab games with the Rivercats, likely will be the next infielder back. Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. George Kontos, a Chicago native who idolized Michael Jordan, played golf with him in Florida over the winter.
