SCRANTON — Speaking softly Wednesday to the jury charged with determining whether he lives or dies, Jessie Con-ui confessed to feeling shame for murdering prison guard Eric Williams, but couldn’t explain why he did it. The inmate facing the death penalty for murdering Williams inside U.S. Penitentiary Canaan in 2013 apologized to Williams’ family, friends and coworkers for killing an innocent man before suggesting the jury spare his life for the sake of his family. “I’m so sorry that my actions caused so much heartache and pain,” Con-ui said in an uncross-examined allocution.
