Restored lost Duvivier classic ‘Panique’ plays at BAMPFA

French director Julien Duvivier, like many European filmmakers, spent World War II in the comfortable exile of Hollywood, where he made a couple of nice movies (“Lydia,” “Tales of Manhattan”). Michel Simon stars as the enigmatic Monsieur Hire (which is the title of Patrice Leconte’s 1989 remake). The film has been restored and plays this month at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, 2155 Center St.
