Shots fired, schools placed on brief lockdown near downtown Colorado Springs

Palmer High and Community Prep Charter schools, as well as North Middle School, went on lockdown briefly Wednesday morning after police responded to several calls of shots being fired in the area. Many of the students from both high schools were at lunch when the gunfire erupted. Connor Newman, a senior at Community Prep, said two of his friends from school were trying to retrieve a stolen cellphone from a group of kids in a car when two males in the car fired shots. The first call to police came from the 500 block of Wahsatch Avenue at 11:21 a.m., a Gold Hill substation lieutenant said, followed by calls from more people about shots being fired.
