This year was marked an increasingly anti-feminist slant in government and an entertainment industry awakening to the reality that — surprise, surprise — it’s been rife systemic sexual assault for generations. That doesn’t mean, however, that what we saw up on the screen this year hasn’t been good for women. Indeed, in terms of offering films dedicated to strong, well-rounded and grounded woman characters, 2017 has been a true turning point. What stands out about 2017’s crop of women-led films are the ways in which they amplify voices and portray journeys we’ve rarely heard or seen at the multiplex. Less and less are women on screen just manic pixie dream girls, damsels in distress or psycho ex-girlfriends. Less and less are they simply there to advance the plot for their male counterparts.
