Major Alaska highway near Anchorage closed by rockslide

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Officials say a major highway south of Alaska's largest city has been blocked by a rockslide that includes mud and other debris. State transportation department spokeswoman Shannon McCarthy said Monday there were no reports of injuries following the pre-dawn slide. It forced the closure of the Seward Highway near the community of Indian about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Anchorage. McCarthy says Alaska State Troopers reported the slide at about 5:50 a.m. She says the slide is still "somewhat active" but crews planned to start clearing its edges while the department confers with its geologists. The slide is about four feet (1.2 meters) deep and covers about 75 feet (22 meters) of roadway.
