Imagining Colorado: Books, authors with connections to the Centennial State

By Tom Cronin, Special to The Denver Post While Colorado has been home to some of the nation’s most gifted writers, many of them didn’t write about Colorado. James Salter (“Downhill Racer”), Leon Uris (“Exodus”), Robert Heinlein (“Strangers in a Strange Land”), Joanne Greenberg (“I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”), John Fante, Damon Runyon and Hunter Thompson come to mind. Willa Cather’s protagonist in “The Song of the Lark” grows up in the fictional Colorado town of “Moonstone.” Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” famously describes rogue escapades in Denver.
