Why Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” is the sort of directorial achievement the Academy always overlooks

Saoirse Ronan and Beanie Feldstein in "Lady Bird" (Credit: A24) When Greta Gerwig was nominated for Best Director by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences on Tuesday for her film “Lady Bird,” she made history. In addition to becoming just the fifth woman to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar — the others being Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”), Jane Campion (“The Piano”), Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) — Gerwig became the first woman to be nominated for the award for her debut film. As far as entertainment awards go, Gerwig’s nomination is an important accomplishment.
