Local principal pens his school's turnaround story

By Ben Felder Staff Writer bfelder@oklahoman.com A former Oklahoma City principal has a new book that chronicles the passion and strategy he deployed in leading a cultural shift at a once-troubled elementary school. Lee Roland, who spent 12 years as principal of Tulakes Elementary in the Putnam City Schools district in northwest Oklahoma City, released "Fantastic Voyage" earlier this month, in which he writes about his time as principal, often sharing the way he motivated teachers, welcomed parents and worked alongside students, most of whom came from impoverished homes. "I felt compelled to get that story down so that it could help and impact others," Roland, 58, told The Oklahoman. Empathy towards students and parents is a consistent theme throughout the book and Roland outlines how he worked to get his mostly white staff to gain a better understanding of their mostly nonwhite families. "Over time, the weather of life violently ripped every leaf of hope, happiness, and faith from their branches," wrote Roland, describing many of the families he served at Tulakes.Read more on NewsOK.com
