Elaborate masks, similar to what you’d see adorning the faces of those taking part in Italy’s festive Carnevale di Venezia, helped make Opera Colorado’s Masked Ball a grand occasion. But amid those adorned with feathers and gemstones, one in particular stood out: Chip Horne’s “Phantom of the Oprah,” a you-have-to-see-it-to-appreciate-it creation in which the Opera Colorado board member donned a “Phantom of the Opera” cape and top hat, and then positioned one of the musical’s iconic half-masks over a headshot of the equally iconic Oprah Winfrey. Chaired by Michael Bock, chairman emeritus of the Opera Colorado board, and his wife, Julie, the lively fundraiser was held at the McNichols Civic Center Building. Merrill Shields, also a member of the Opera Colorado board, coordinated the pre- and post-dinner festivities that took place on the historic building’s second floor.
