Dennis Cook/AP Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh once questioned the unanimous decision in US v. Nixon. The decision led to President Richard Nixon having to turn over the Watergate tapes to authorities, essentially leading to his resignation. Kavanaugh believes in a strong executive and his penchant for presidential power could take greater importance if President Trump has to testify in the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The discussion occured in 1999, shortly after Kavanaugh was a member of Kenneth Starr's team that led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton. WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh suggested several years ago that the unanimous high court ruling in 1974 that forced President Richard Nixon to turn over the Watergate tapes, leading to the end of his presidency, may have been wrongly decided. Kavanaugh was taking part in a roundtable discussion with other lawyers when he said at three different points that the decision in US v.
