Elgin woman killed in crash involving go-kart near Marengo Township

A 29-year-old Elgin woman was killed in a crash Saturday night in the 22200 block of River Road in unincorporated Marengo Township, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. At 10:20 p.m., the McHenry and Boone County sheriff's offices, Marengo police, Marengo conservation police and the Marengo Fire Protection District responded to a reported crash involving a 2011 Toyota Camry and a Manco go-kart. A preliminary investigation indicated that both vehicles had been traveling west on River Road when the Camry, driven by 26-year-old Brett Herold of Marengo, struck the back of the go-kart, which was driven by the Elgin woman, the release said. The woman was taken to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the release. Herold did not suffer any injuries in the crash. A portion of River Road was closed for about six hours, according to the release. Herold, who fled the scene and was picked up by police shortly after, has been charged with failure to reduce speed and leaving the scene of a crash, a Class 4 felony punishable by one to three years in prison. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office's Major Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coroner's Office continue to investigate. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to call McHenry County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762-STOP, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office tip line at 815-338-2144 or email tipline@mchenrycountyil.gov.
