Staff reportThe annual Monarch Butterfly migration is underway and many of the colorful insects have been seen refueling for their long journey south at the Children's Garden at Myriad Botanical Gardens. While the insect's colorful wings are delightful for butterfly watchers to look at, they are actually warnings to predators that monarchs are poisonous to eat because of toxins carried in the milkweed they lived on when they were caterpillars. In a massive citizen science project started in 1992, tiny, individualized tags are being applied by volunteers to monarchs so they can be tracked in their long journey from North America into Mexico, according to the monarchwatch.org website.
