Merriam-Webster named 'they' word of the year because of the rise in people openly identifying as non-binary

Merriam-Webster announced that "they" is the word of the year. The publication added the singular use of "they" and "themself" to the dictionary earlier this year, marking a significant moment in the recognition of non-binary gender identities. A Pew Research survey found that over one-third of US teens and people in their young 20s knows someone who uses gender-neutral pronouns.
