Hawaii unemployment filings reached historic highs in March as a result of closures underway to stop the spread of coronavirus. The state Department of Labor and Industrial relations reported 160,929 claims last month, including 10,495 duplicates. March 7 was the day with the fewest claims at 42 and that number soon skyrocketed as tourism and hotels saw a steep declines due to state and county mandates for self-quarantine.
