San Francisco, Oakland and South San Francisco plan to test guaranteed income programs for poor residents

San Francisco, Oakland and South San Francisco are at various stages of introducing guaranteed income programs on a limited basis to test how effective they are in helping people. “Guaranteed income can significantly reduce poverty by providing an income floor that helps individuals survive. It’s a buffer against economic shocks,” said Mark Nagales, vice mayor of the City of South San Francisco, which is considering a universal basic income (UBI) program for the city of 67,000 residents.
