The candidates’ forum at Freeland on Whidbey Island had plowed on more than two hours. Unable to let go, local ideologues were having it out in the parking lot at Trinity Lutheran Church. Inside, however, a pair of political opposites — Island County Democratic Chair Paul Fournier and his Republican counterpart Dorothy Cleveland — were taking up the folding chairs. It wasn’t fun for Fournier, once burned over 90 percent of his body by the crash of a plane he was piloting during the Vietnam War.
