Council Defers Vote On Whether To Pursue Panhandling Case

By William Crum wcrum@oklahoman.com Staff writerA decision on whether to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a controversial Oklahoma City panhandling ordinance will wait at least two weeks.The city council voted 6-3 Tuesday to defer a vote on the matter.Ward 6 Councilwoman JoBeth Hamon, along with Ward 2 Councilman James Cooper and Ward 7 Councilwoman Nikki Nice, opposed deferral.Hamon previously stated her opposition to pursuing the case any further, after a federal appeals court found the ordinance was unconstitutional.Before the council's vote late Tuesday afternoon, after spending nearly an hour meeting in private, Hamon sought — and received — assurances from a deputy city attorney that the ordinance was not being enforced, in light of the appeals court ruling.After Tuesday's vote, she said she thought it was "a waste of our legal department's time and resources to try to continue fighting an ordinance that is ineffective and harmful to people who are already vulnerable in our community.Read more on NewsOK.com
