Council Questions Jail Plan

By William Crum Staff Writerwcrum@Oklahoman.comAn Oklahoma City councilwoman said Tuesday a proposal to build a new Oklahoma County jail could be the “perfect opportunity” to consider consolidation of some law enforcement duties. A county study committee has recommended seeking a sales tax increase to pay for a new 2,800-inmate jail and remodel the county’s juvenile justice center in Oklahoma City. Ward 6 Councilwoman Meg Salyer said at Tuesday’s council meeting that she toured the jail in downtown Oklahoma City last Thursday and “it was honestly one of the nastiest places I’ve ever been in my life.” In response to a federal investigation, the county has agreed to improve supervision of inmates and treatment for the mentally ill, and correct other chronic problems at the 24-year-old high-rise lockup.
