Baker: If trooper wrote racist posts, he ‘should be fired’

A state police trooper already under investigation by Suffolk prosecutors for possibly shooting an all-terrain vehicle driver in the foot Saturday during a melee on the Southeast Expressway should be fired if he made violent and racist remarks online about the citizens he’s supposed to protect, Gov. Charlie Baker said today.

 

Baker activates National Guard ahead of powerful nor’easter

Gov. Charlie Baker has activated hundreds of members of the National Guard ahead of tomorrow’s nor’easter, which he said is expected to whack the coast with even more water than the early January snowstorm that flooded parts of downtown Boston and coastal communities.“If you are in one of these typically affected areas (by flooding), do not ride out the storm in your home if you’re told to evacuate,” Baker said at an early afternoon press conference. “Rescue during the storm may not be possible.”

 

Helipad proposal for Roxbury shelved by Suffolk Construction

Suffolk Construction is "indefinitely" postponing its proposal to put a private helipad next to its Roxbury headquarters, according to the city, in a surprise decision that comes just days before it was slated to make its case to a city board.The company notified Mayor Martin J. Walsh's office of its decision this afternoon.

 

Feds: Beverly man sent white powder to Trump son

BOSTON — A Massachusetts man has been charged with sending a letter with a white powder to Donald Trump Jr. that landed his wife, Vanessa, in the hospital.Daniel Frisiello, of Beverly, was arrested Thursday. He is expected to appear in federal court in Worcester later Thursday. It could not immediately be determined if he has a lawyer.Federal authorities say he also sent letters containing powder to four other people, including the office of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, of Michigan.

 

Massachusetts school votes to keep contentious mascot name

LENOX — Students at a Massachusetts school want to remain millionaires.The Lenox Memorial Middle and High School student council on Wednesday announced that a school-wide poll found a majority of students want to keep the sometimes contentious Millionaires mascot.About 96 percent of the school's 438 students voted last month. Fifty-one percent voted to keep the nickname, 32 percent wanted to change it, and 17 percent had no opinion.

 

Cops seize over 9,000 bags of heroin in busts

Two men suspected of peddling heroin are facing drug trafficking charges after cops recovered 9,000 bags of the opioid, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said.Julio Sanchez, 39 of Springfield, and Andy Espinal-Antonio, 32 of Worcester, were arrested in Springfield Saturday by members of the Hampden County Narcotics Task Force on charges of trafficking more than 200 grams of heroin and conspiracy to violate drug laws, Gulluni said in a statement yesterday.Espinal-Antonio was also charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, authorities said.

Sal DiDomenico scored a coveted role as an assistant majority leader — with a $20,000 raise to boot — amid a leadership shuffle yesterday, a move that elevates the Everett lawmaker while he’s emerging as a potential Senate President candidate in 2019.Harriette Chandler, the chamber’s current leader, tapped DiDomenico to round out her leadership team, which now includes Sen. Cynthia Creem, a Newton Democrat, as the new majority leader and Chandler’s top deputy, and Sen. Jason Lewis as the new assistant majority whip.

 

Yawkey, make way for Jersey Street

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Say hello, again, to Jersey Street.And goodbye to Yawkey Way.In a move meant to distance the Red Sox from an ugly blot of their history, the team announced it has formally applied to change the name of the street on which it resides in Fenway Park.The Sox petitioned the Boston Public Improvement Commission to request that Yawkey Way become Jersey Street, by which it was originally known. The Sox said they have the approval and cooperation of all Yawkey Way abutters.
