MOORESBURG - Betty Ruth Brewer, age 86, of Mooresburg went to her heavenly home on August 29, 2019.
Betty was a member of Spruce Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Brewer; parents, Barrett Gordan and Archie Bowlin; great-granddaughter, Miley Ann Pait; granddaughter-in-law, Heather Miley; brothers, Bobby Gordan, Gary Bowlin, June Bowlin, Curt Bowlin, Randle Gordan; sisters, Ruth Collins, Vada (Tootsie) Johnson, Bonnie Walker, Roseavee Mills.

MIAMI (AP) — Unsure of where Hurricane Dorian might strike, Florida residents watched the increasingly dire forecast with a sense of helplessness Thursday and braced for what could be the most powerful storm to hit the state's east coast in a generation.
President Donald Trump warned it could be an "absolute monster."
"All indications are it's going to hit very hard and it's going to be very big," Trump said in a video he tweeted Thursday evening, comparing Dorian to Hurricane Andrew, which devastated South Florida in 1992.

WISE – After 20 years of working with one partner in an annual summer free clinic, The Health Wagon announced a new $1 million partnership and plans to expand services beyond Southwest Virginia.
Health Wagon Executive Director Teresa Tyson and President Joe Frank Smiddy joined state Delegate Terry Kilgore, Virginia U.S. Sen. Mark Warner and federal legislators and United Health Foundation President Tracy Malone at Health Wagon’s Wise office on Thursday to announce the three-year, $1 million grant from UHF.

Finally, the Johnson City Cardinals can take a deep breath and get ready for the Appalachian League playoffs.
After surviving a wild four-team race to close out the regular season, the Cardinals got a day off on Thursday. Up next is a best-of-three semifinal series with the Bristol Pirates. The postseason begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. at DeVault Stadium in Bristol, Virginia.
Johnson City clinched the Appy League’s West Division championship on the final day of the regular season with a 9-7 victory over the Kingsport Mets.

COEBURN — Anna Whited led the way for Eastside with 16 kills, five aces and 13 digs as the Spartans took down Wise Central in four sets at home in a nonconference tilt.
Leci Sensabaugh chipped in with 15 service points and five aces, while Kaylee Yates had four blocks to aid Eastside in the win.
Hannah McAmis had 24 digs for the Warriors in the loss. Caitlin Glover had 19 assists and Olivia Basham had 11 kills.

ELIZABETHTON — Abbey Jayne had 27 kills, 16 digs, two blocks and two aces in Sullivan South’s win.

NORTON — It was not a picture-perfect night for Ridgeview on Friday, but it was enough to win going away.
The Wolfpack overcame three first-half fumbles and a blocked punt to take a 40-13 nondistrict win over the J.I. Burton Raiders at Lawson-Fitchko Stadium in the season opener for both squads.
A LOT OF MISTAKES EARLY
“We got a W, but we made too many mistakes, and we’re not where we need to be by any stretch of the imagination,” said Ridgeview coach Rick Mullins.

KINGSPORT — Kingsport's popular Halloween Bash is expanding to two nights.
The Kingsport Farmers Market will come alive for two nights of the Halloween Bash — Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct, 26, with live music, games, a $1,500 costume contest, food trucks, beer and more.
Last year, more than 100 people entered the costume content, competing to win $1,500 in cash prizes. The entry fee is $10, with the top winner receiving $1,000 and five runners-up receiving cash prizes as well.
The Halloween Bash doors open at 6 p.m.

JOHNSON CITY — Gamers of the Tri-Cities, it’s almost time for the “ultimate” video game brawl.
This Saturday at the Millennium Center in Johnson City, East Tennessee State University will be hosting its inaugural Buccaneer Brawl — a three-hour video game tournament featuring Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Super Smash Bros Melee.
The tournament and gaming festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, but there is a registration fee if you plan to compete in any of the Super Smash Bros competitions.
