Christopher Nolan is a controversial director here on /r/movies, and a common flaw that is stated is that his films are filled with exposition. I've seen people argue against it by saying that it's lazy and in excessive amounts, an insult to the viewers, and I've seen people defend it by saying without it, Nolan's films would be far too complex to understand for the average movie goer.
There are numerous reasons why Cowboys & Aliens failed with both critics and audiences. Even as a minor supporter myself, I find it hard to defend the film as a whole. My favorite part is easily the first act, where it looks and feel like an actual John Ford or Clint Eastwood western.
