A Denver City councilwoman threatened legal action against Mayor Michael Hancock’s administration in a letter late Friday afternoon, saying she has been the subject of a smear campaign. “I am requesting that you direct your officials to cease taking actions that defame Councilwoman Sawyer and constitute retaliation against her for speaking out on matters of public concern,” the letter from Amanda Sawyer’s attorney says. The attorney, Patricia Bangert, goes on to describe those actions as “inappropriate and illegal” and says if they continue “appropriate legal action will be initiated.” Since she was elected in June 2019, Sawyer said, her frustrations have grown with several city departments.
