PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence firefighters union nominated a new president Tuesday night.Derek Silva, who currently serves as vice president of the Providence Fire Fighters IAFF Local 799, will take the helm on Nov. 1.Current president Paul Doughty is stepping down after 14 years.Doughty, who works as an arson investigator for the Providence Fire Department, said it was time for him to step down.
