The Ocean Cleanup At age 19, entrepreneur Boyan Slat founded The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit that aims to rid the oceans of plastic. The organization's U-shaped device is now collecting plastic the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash-filled vortex that's more than twice the size of Texas. In December, the group hauled 60 bags of plastic debris into the Vancouver Harbor. The team wants to turn that debris into a new product by September 2020.
