Retired Orange Park Police Chief Jim Boivin recently was honored with the “Outstanding Leadership Award” from the Criminal Justice Advisory Board at St. Johns River State College. The award recognizes Boivin for his outstanding service, dedication and leadership to the board from 2005-12. Boivin served on the Orange Park police force for 35 years including 11 as chief before retiring last year. (2012)

The dais at Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown’s annual Interfaith Breakfast on Monday only featured one faith. The event was designed to encourage the faith-based community to partner together to improve education and reduce crime. But all seven of the religious leaders who spoke at the breakfast were from Christian churches. At Brown’s 2011 and 2012 breakfasts, the speakers included a rabbi, Hindu priest and an imam. read more

Three Jacksonville men walked up Pangola Drive about noon Monday. As a car passed, someone inside fired a gun at them. Blood dripped down one man’s leg and stained the sidewalk as he hobbled down Plymouth Street to the Sunrise Food Store, where manager Elie Thome told him not to get blood in his store but to wait outside for an ambulance. About two hours after the shooting, police Sgt. Bobby Lyle said he had “pretty good suspect information” but it’s only a first name. read more
