First time I watched Taxi Driver I saw him more as a villain than a hero or at least an anti-hero and found it hard to sympathise with him. However, upon a second viewing I have come to understand him a lot more and see him for the weak, twisted and mentally unstable person he is and who at the end of the day only has good intentions of saving Iris and 'cleaning the streets' even if its not by donating to charity.
