Donald E. Werner Jr. | 1929-2015: ‘old-school’ Firefighter Rose To Be Columbus Chief

Donald E. Werner Jr., a lifelong South Side resident who always worked alongside firefighters in stations throughout the city on his way to becoming Columbus fire chief, has died. He was 85. Werner, who joined the Fire Division in 1953, is remembered both for his meteoric rise through the division’s ranks and for the no-frills management style with which he led it as chief.
