Six people were injured, one critically, after a driver in his 90s lost control of his car Thursday afternoon and slammed into the University Cafe in downtown Palo Alto near the Stanford campus, police officials and a store manager said. At 12:36 p.m., the driver plowed into pedestrians and customers sitting at tables in front of the cafe at 271 University Ave., pinning several people between the vehicle and the front of the business, said manager Fabian Moreno. The man slowly drove onto the curb, likely at around 5 mph, and hit the crowd, said Officer Marianna Villaescusa, a Palo Alto police spokeswoman. Customers were asked to leave through back doors as employees assisted paramedics at the scene.
