Last Thursday the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout came and went without much ado.It no longer seems to get the attention it did when it was started 38 years ago to help smokers kick the habit for a day and hopefully, forever.Part of the reason is that local chapters of the cancer society have merged into regional ones and local events staged to help people quit smoking for the day do not have the organizational and promotional push they once did.
