With a runway and spaceport license, the city hopes to capture a piece of the emerging space tourism industry, which comes in a variety of spacecraft and space planes, as well as develop other related aerospace infrastructure at the 700-acre site in southeast Houston. Ellington will become the 10th federally designated spaceport now that the FAA has approved the license, putting it in place to accommodate commercial space travel that could support various industries from space tourism to manufacturing. Sierra Nevada is pressing ahead with development of the Dream Chaser, and has reconfigured it to possibly deliver cargo to the space station, as well as other payloads into low-Earth orbit.
