Two of their sons, 19-year-old Stephen and 7-year-old Joe, have muscular dystrophy, a serious genetic disease that causes progressive muscle degeneration. Stephen also has struggled with pneumonia and heart issues, a common side effect of the disease. In January, Maria underwent an emergency C-section. Despite all the health and financial struggles, the Mireles family still wants to make Christmas special this year, which is why they asked for help getting toys for their children through the Goodfellows program.
