When Amador Olive Oil Co. founder Susan Bragstad moved from Marin to her 45-acre farm near Amador City in 1984, the rural landscape was reassuringly familiar. To preserve that character, Bragstad helped create the Mother Lode Land Trust in 1991. The nonprofit quickly began by protecting 600 acres outside of Volcano, and now has close to 8,000 acres across five counties. “I feel very strongly about preserving agricultural land and promoting local agriculture,” said Bragstad. Bragstad’s Amador Olive Oil, which she began producing in 1995, is a blend of Spanish and Italian varietals harvested from nearly 400 trees. Andrae’s Bakery: “Matt Andrae is just the best baker in the whole world — his Basque cake is fabulous, but everything there is delicious.” Shenandoah Valley Barbera wines: “The Barbera up here is quite good; Yorba’s is quite delicious, as is Cooper Winery’s.” The sixth Barbera Festival takes place June 11 at the first Amador County winery to produce the Italian varietal, Terra d’Oro/Montevina Winery in Plymouth.
