'A Field Guide to the North American Family': Garth Risk Hallberg, earlier and shorter

This enigmatic, fitfully brilliant book “A Field Guide to the North American Family” is the amplification of a work Garth Risk Hallberg originally released 10 years ago through a small, independent publisher. Were it not for the success of “City on Fire,” the gargantuan novel Mr. Hallberg published in 2015 to some criticism and much applause, this cleverly, if snarkily, titled and occasionally tantalizing book might not have gotten a second life.
