Debbie Reynolds: We all knew Liberace was gay Associated Press Copyright 2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Updated 12:48 am, Thursday, May 23, 2013 (AP) — In the new film "Behind the Candelabra," veteran entertainer Debbie Reynolds has just three major scenes to flesh out one of the most complicated figures in piano-playing showman Liberace's life: his loving but sometimes manipulative mother Frances. Reynolds joined Liberace's inner circle while both were doing stage shows in Las Vegas. "Behind the Candelabra" picks up the story of Liberace, played by Michael Douglas, in the '70s and focuses on his six-year relationship with the much younger Scott Thorson, portrayed by Matt Damon. Liberace died from complications of AIDS in 1987 at age 67. On the heels of its theatrical world premiere this week in Cannes, the film begins a run in overseas cinemas starting in June.

Reddit is an English language website, so anything non-English is a foreign language in this dynamic. This means that Studio Ghibli films, which all have a popular A-list actor dubbed track (some even have re-done animation to match the English words) were disqualified. This upset some of you, but so be it. There's no perfect system to this kind of poll. If we had said "any film released to the international market first" we would've been here all day researching the exact origin of every movie, some would be in English made by Americans, Kubrick stuff would be considered foreign, blah blah blah headache. Subtitles is the key metric used in this poll. Is the movie predominantly viewed with subtitles by English speaking audiences? Yes, a lot of live action foreign movies have dubbed tracks, but the majority of English speaking audiences don't ever use them. (Rare exceptions, of course, like Rumble in the Bronx, there are exceptions to everything.) With all that in mind, this also excluded silent films, since most all of them have English title cards. Here is the list of films that were disqualified from the final results, yet made the cut in the poll: Akira Metropolis Passion of Joan of Arc Les Triplettes de Belleville - The Triplettes of Belleville 2003 Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1920 Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (FW Murnau- 1922, Germany) La Jetée - The Jetty 1962 (Hulu Plus and Criterion DVD release have default English narration) And you can imagine that all Hayao Miyazaki films would be on the list. Final note: If you check the original polling thread, you'll notice a different order in some of the results (Oldboy being #1 now, for instance) I tallied the results a week after the poll, as per the plan. It was originally in "contest mode" to curb the "let's downvote XYZ so ABC is higher" behavior. submitted by girafa [link] [comment]
