Jamie Giellis, who recently challenged Mayor Michael Hancock in a runoff election, was scheduled Tuesday for surgery for a rare medical condition. Surgeons with the University of Colorado planned to remove a section of Giellis’ trachea and voice box to alleviate a condition known as tracheal stenosis. She expected her recovery would “be slow, but should be permanent, and my voice should recover well,” she posted on Facebook on Monday. On the campaign trail, Giellis occasionally inhaled sharply or labored to breathe, including at her campaign launch party.
