Former Iditarod Champ Lance Mackey Takes Up Car Racing

[...] before May, he had no intentions of buying a stock car and racing among the Legends and Bandoleros cars that race at 7 p.m. Thursdays during the summer at the speedway located at 2488 Lions Road. Since a young age, Mackey always wanted to go fast and he has. Leading up to June, Mackey had been riding with speed and style in his 2008 Dodge Charger SRT, which he received for winning the 2008 Iditarod, his second in a string of four-straight titles. Speed can be costly, and Mackey found out the hard way after getting hit with his seventh speeding ticket at the beginning of June, prompting a change in vehicles, and prompting him to pick up a new hobby. Mackey hasn't been around the sport for long, and he's been receiving tons of help from other crews and racers at the speedway, including longtime veteran Al Trettel. On Thursday night, different racers and crews were constantly helping with others' cars and mechanical issues, and after two practice runs, Mackey needed some mechanical help of his own. Along with having a car ravaged by wrecks, Mackey isn't able to practice as much as he would like because the speedway only gives racers the opportunity to race once per week (Thursday) and practice every other week (Tuesday). Mackey took two practice runs before the racing started on Thursday, and he said he is already feeling better in the cockpit than during the previous weeks.
