Trainers Jerry Hollendorfer and Art Sherman have competed against each other for 35 years — almost all of that at Bay Area tracks — but never in a race like the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The event culminates with the $5 million Classic, in which Hollendorfer has undisputed favorite Shared Belief, unbeaten in seven starts, and Sherman has California Chrome, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. When Shared Belief won the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding 2-year-old in 2013, California Chrome was primarily running in races restricted to California-breds. While California Chrome was romping through the San Felipe Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Shared Belief was recovering from an injury to his right front foot. With Hollendorfer the leading trainer in Northern California since 1985 and one of the Southern California leaders since both expanded their stables a few years ago, even Sherman admits the rivalry has been one-sided. Yet Shared Belief’s victories over older horses in the Pacific Classic and Awesome Again Stakes have thrust him ahead of California Chrome, who has faced only horses his own age.
