Saguaro National Park busy repairing rutted trails (AP) — There are trenches up to 2 feet deep that cut across some trails in the eastern district of Saguaro National Park, deep ruts blamed on horses' hooves, storm runoff and years of natural erosion. Park employees are working to repair and reroute the most severely rutted trails and some trail segments have been closed to horses to prevent more damage. Trail crew supervisor Shelley Lane told the Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/17zOqRB ) that the worst trails are those that have taken a straight line up a steep grade. Home to North America's largest cactus, the area became a national monument in 1933 and received national park status in 1994. Lane acknowledged that horseback riding is considered a historical use in the park and officials don't want to alienate equestrian users.
