A night after Jake Peavy surrendered seven runs, Matt Cain gave up eight Thursday night at AT&T Park in an embarrassing 17-7 beatdown by the Rockies, who morphed into a slow-pitch softball team in the fifth inning when scoring 13 runs. Cain coughed up 10 hits, including home runs to Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, and his ERA shot to 7.84, a tad better than Peavy’s 9.00. The back end of the rotation is a mess, and no savior is knocking on the door in the minors. A day after the Giants became the first team in history to yield at least a dozen runs in an inning twice over a seven-game stretch — counting the April 29 game in New York started by Peavy — Lincecum will throw in front of scouts Friday afternoon at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Stadium, hoping to land a job in a team’s rotation. The Giants have said they could be interested in Lincecum as a reliever, but the shellackings Peavy and Cain are taking — the Giants have lost nine of their past 10 starts — would suggest there might be internal talk of considering Lincecum as a starter. In the ugly fifth inning, Cain faced four batters — homer, double, error, single — and each scored, and it got no better with reliever Vin Mazzaro, who was charged with nine runs (seven earned), the most by a Giants reliever since Ray Sadecki in 1966 (nine runs, five earned). Derek Law got the final two outs in the fifth, ending 37 minutes of agony for the Giants, who surrendered the most runs in an inning at home since the Montreal Expos dropped a 13-spot at Candlestick Park in 1997.
