Google has threatened to remove its search engine from Australia, and Facebook has said it will remove its news from the feeds for all Australians, if a code that will force digital platforms to negotiate payments to news companies is passed. As reported by The Guardian, this would mean that the 19 million Australians who use Google each month would no longer be able to do so and the 17 million Australians who use Facebook each month would not longer be able to see or post news on their feeds. The legislation that has been proposed is currently in front of the parliament and would force these digital platforms to negotiate with news companies for a suitable payment for using their content.
