Greene Devils Break Away From 'blazers After Halftime

GRAY — Two-time defending 4A state football champion Greeneville had its 30-game winning streak broken last week by Knox Powell, but there is no reason to feel sorry for the Greene Devils at this early stage of the 2019 season. Despite heavy graduation losses from last year’s team, Greeneville is still Greeneville to a large degree, as the Devils demonstrated Friday night with a convincing 31-14 nonconference win over Daniel Boone. “Oh yes, we’re not going to have many offensive lines like that the rest of the year,” Boone veteran coach Jeremy Jenkins said. Greeneville (1-1) spotted Boone (1-1) a 7-0 advantage, but the Devils of first-year coach Dan Hammonds scored 31 unanswered points to win comfortably. The Greene Devils led 10-7 at halftime and 24-7 through three quarters. Three first-half Greeneville turnovers — two deep in Boone territory — kept the Trailblazers close at intermission. BALANCED GREENEVILLE Greeneville produced 431 total offensive yards to Boone’s 213, and the Greene Devils spread them around nicely. Powerful senior running back Ty Youngblood scored touchdowns on runs of 4 and 11 yards while gaining 108 yards on 15 carries.
