By Jaclyn Cosgrove, Staff WriterLAWTON — A syphilis outbreak in Comanche County has been fueled by iPhone apps and online sites that help users plan out anonymous meetings for sex, state health officials said. Since July 28, nine people have tested positive for syphilis in Comanche County, a 300 percent increase in the usual number of cases of the sexually transmitted disease. The cases have primarily been among men who have sex with men, some of whom are married to women, and also among IV drug users. Brandie O’Connor, regional director of the Comanche County Health Department, said the number of sexual partners that the residents who tested positive have reported has been alarming, as well. “When you have nine positives, and they have multiple — and I mean double digits multiple partners — you can see where this particular outbreak can become very significant very quickly,” O’Connor said. Syphilis is a bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact, starting as a painless sore, according to the Mayo Clinic.Read more on NewsOK.com
