Activist investor Bill Ackman once again denounced weight loss and nutritional supplements company Herbalife as a pyramid scheme, but Wall Street shrugged off his criticism and sent the company's stock soaring 25 percent Tuesday.
In a three-hour presentation in New York, Ackman's focused on Herbalife's "nutrition clubs," private settings where Herbalife distributors sell the company's products — such as weight-loss shakes — and recruit new members.
Ackman, who runs Pershing Square Capital Management, an activist hedge fund, has bet heavily against Herbalife by using "short" trades that will be profitable if the price of the company's stock falls.
Ackman has been trying to convince other investors to take similar positions, most memorably in a shouting match he got into with Carl Icahn, a rival investor, on live television in January 2013.

U. S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright threated not to accept Damas' guilty plea when he hesitated in explaining his role in the conspiracy and insisted he didn't knowingly bring drugs into the prison.
A criminal complaint filed in January says Damas conspired with a sister of an inmate and took bribes to smuggle in other items such as cigarettes, lighters and drug paraphernalia.
A friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is believed to have provided the handgun used to kill a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer during the manhunt, people with knowledge of the investigation said Tuesday.
The 9 mm Ruger pistol described in the indictment is the same handgun that was used to kill MIT police officer Sean Collier during the manhunt for the bombing suspects, according to the two people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.
According to the indictment, Silva knowingly had possession of the gun, "which had the importer's and manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, and altered and had previously been shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce."
