A much-anticipated ruling in Kansas' school finance lawsuit will come down Friday, determining whether the state must increase funding beyond the more than $3 billion it spends annually on education — and potentially affecting the Republican governor's deep tax cuts meant to spur economic growth.
Parents and four school districts sued Kansas in 2010, saying lawmakers reneged on promises made in 2006 to provide a certain funding level for public schools and that it was harming the state's education system, including programs aimed at helping poor and minority students.
Legislators have delayed any decisions on allocating money for schools until a final judgment was handed down, though the president of the Kansas Senate said lawmakers will need time to consider the ruling no matter what it is.
With education funding cuts in recent years, school districts have trimmed their staffs, cut after-school programs and raised fees for parents.
