Calorie labeling on restaurant menus, once confined to large chain restaurants in certain cities, is soon coming your way. On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration announced its final rules for nationwide nutritional labeling, implementing a little-known provision of the Affordable Care Act that called for its expansion. The rules stipulate that any business with more than 20 locations that sells prepared food—think vending machines and food trucks in addition to restaurants—will have one year to comply with the rules.
Within the turkey lies the tangled history of the world. OK, not quite. But not far off, either. ‘Turkey’ the bird is native to North America. But ‘turkey’ the word is a geographic mess—a tribute to the vagaries of colonial trade and conquest. As you might have suspected, the English term for the avian creature likely comes from Turkey the country.
President Obama’s executive action last week is only an interim step. More amnesty is coming, much more. It must. More amnesty is coming, first, because the president’s action creates an unsustainable status quo. Millions of people are about to obtain work permits and Social Security numbers—but not (or so the president says) any right to health coverage or other social benefits.
