Independence Day director Roland Emmerich announced during a 20th anniversary fan screening of the film that he's currently developing a film based on the historical Battle of Midway. The battle—which began on June 4, 1942 during World War II—had the Americans as "underdog," Emmerich said. Over a few days, the United States Navy defended itself against a Japanese Fleet.
