Downloadable games on Xbox One may no longer use the name Xbox Live Arcade. In an interview at the Xbox One announcement yesterday, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer explained to IGN that the name of downloadable games hasn’t been decided for the company’s new platform. “I think people designating things as Arcade is probably going to go away,” Spencer told IGN. “I always struggle even now. I know XBLA is something that means something in terms of a place in the ecosystem, but when you think about ‘Arcade,’ maybe I’m just an old guy, I think about arcade as lining up quarters on the Centipede machine and playing, and now I’m seeing games like Deadlight, like Shadow Complex, which don’t feel like ‘arcade games’ to me. These feel like complete games that are just built at either a different scale, a different business model, a different creative point. And I think that what we’re going to see in the next generation is actually more diversity in the kind of games that show up on the television screen for gamers, and I think that’s just opening up possibilities.” Continue reading…
